Tahajjud is Sunnah muakkadah which means it is a confirmed Sunnah. Tahajjud has been consistently mentioned in Quran as one of the attributes of the pious and noble ones. Allah says in the Quran:
“And some part of the night keep vigil for it as an additional prayer for you; maybe that your Lord will raise you up to a praised position.” – Al Israa (17:79),
This ayat is interpreted differently by different scholars. Some scholars claim in the light of this verse of Holy Quran that Tahajjud was mandatory (farz) for the Prophet (saw) but for the ummah of the prophet, it is simply optional (nafl). However there is difference of opinion regarding this. There are further references to tahajjud in Surah Muzammil.
“O you wrapped in garments (i.e. Prophet Muhammad saw)! Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. Half of it or a little less than that Or a little more. And recite the Qur’aan (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, laws). Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and good for governing oneself, and most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allaah)” – Al Muzzamil (73:1-6)
Narrated ‘Aishah (ra):
One night I missed the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) from his bed. I searched for him. When I found him he was in bowing or prostrating posture and was reciting: Subhanaka wa bi hamdika. La ilaha illa Anta (You are free from imperfection and I begin praising You. There is no true god except You).”Another narration is: My hand fell over his feet while he was in prostration with his feet erect. He was supplicating: “Allahumma inni a’udhu biridaka min sakhatika, wa bi-mu’afatika min ‘uqubatika, wa a’udhu bika minka, la uhsi thana’an ‘alaika, Anta kama athnaita ‘ala Nafsika (O Allah! I seek protection against Your Wrath in Your Pleasure. I seek protection in Your Pardon against Your chastisement, I am not capable of enumerating praise of You. You are as You have lauded Yourself).” Riyad as-Salihin, Book 16, Hadith 1430
This hadith is a wake up call for us. I hope we all see what the most blessed man has passed through. We should try and sleep early so that we can wake up early for tahjud. How many of us know what is happening in Bangladesh, Syria, Pakistan, Aleppo, Somalia, etc. Yet we sleep and snore, eat and belch, play and laugh, spends extravagantly e.t.c. How many of us know what they are passing through? Subhanallah!!!. Our brothers are out there that lack all those things that Allah has granted to us free of charge, yet we are ungrateful. They pray with empty stomach, glorified His name without shelter. With all this calamity that has befalls them they are still grateful. Let us leave the matter that doesn’t concern us and face the important one. We can reach out to them in our duha and donations. We should remember the Hadith of the prophet that says, Muslims are like one body, if one part of the body is affected the whole body is affected. Are we like that body today? Instead of promoting peace ✌ we promote vices amongst ourselves. Astagfriullah!!!
Let us turn back to Allah. As the days goes by we are changing instead of adding one sunnah everyday we are busy doing Tahajjud and ly morning selfie. Subhanallah!!! Let us change or make a change now!!!. Ma salaam.
